Pranab Mukherjee- Former President of India and Congress Veteran, Passes Away At 84

Former President Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday. The veteran politician had undergone brain surgery at the Army Research and Referral hospital. His condition declined further after he suffered a septic shock due to his lung infection, the hospital said in a statement. The 84-year-old was admitted to the hospital on August 19. He was also tested positive for novel corona virus.

"With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri #PranabMukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers, duas & prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of You," his son Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted.

Pranab Mukherjee -84 years old who served as India’s 13th President from 2012 to 2017. He was a very hard disciplinarian and supervisor, his Hobbies involved reading, gardening and music.

 He held various positions for the governments led by many politicians in power like- Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.

 He was honored with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award in 2019 by the President of India- Ram Nath Kovind. Before taking his steps in politics he was an effective congressman for nearly 5 decades, he also worked as a teacher And a journalist. 

 He landed in Rajya Sabha in 1969, and he got re-elected for four more times before he finally won his first Lok Sabha election in 2004 from Bengal’s Jangipur. He got re-elected in Rajya Sabha in 2009.

 Mukherjee, was born in Mirati, West Bengal and prospered in Delhi. He first made it to Indira Gandhi’s council of ministers in 1972 and never looked back, going on to hold some of the most powerful portfolios - finance, commerce, external affairs and defense - in Congress governments. He was considered the sharpest mind and the prime troubleshooter in during the reign of Manmohan Singh, who he had appointed as RBI governor earlier.

He had gone to a septic shock due to lung infection, he also tested positive for corona virus. As reported earlier he had developed lung infection and was admitted at the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital for Brain Surgery.

Political Leaders from all over the sectors have offered their condolences to his greiving family.

"With great sadness, the nation receives the news of the unfortunate demise of our former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee. I join the country in paying homage to him. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family and friends," former Congress President Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter.

"India grieves the passing away of Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He has left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation. A scholar par excellence, a towering statesman, he was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society," wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

President Ram Nath Kovind said in a tweet, "The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Condolences to his family, friends & all citizens." Vice President Venkaiah Naidu also expressed grief. He said in a tweet, "He (Mukherjee) rose from humble beginnings to occupy the country’s highest constitutional position through hard work, discipline and dedication."
